How to Text Someone After You Ghosted Them: 12 Examples

Updated September 16, 2026 · by the Charm team

Short answer: own it in one sentence, don’t over-explain, and make the next step easy to decline. “Hey — I disappeared on you a few weeks ago, and that wasn’t fair. I’m sorry. If you’d be up for it, I’d love to pick things back up.” That’s the whole job.

What’s actually going on

When you ghost someone, you leave them with a question they couldn’t answer: what did I do? When you come back, they’re not waiting for your excuse; they’re checking whether you’ll do it again.

So the comeback text has to do three things:

  1. Acknowledge it plainly. Pretending nothing happened (“heyyy how’s it going”) is the move that gets ignored, because it asks them to pretend too.
  2. Take responsibility without a long story. A brief, honest reason is fine. A paragraph of excuses makes it about you.
  3. Leave them in control. They get to decide whether to reopen the door.

Your odds depend mostly on how long it’s been and how far things had gone. Ghosting after three messages is forgettable. Ghosting after three dates stung. After three months of seeing each other, a text may not be enough.

What NOT to send

  • “Hey stranger!” — cute when you’ve both been busy, insulting when you’re the one who vanished.
  • “Sorry, I’ve been SO busy.” Nobody is too busy to send one text for weeks. They know.
  • A long account of your mental state as the opening message. If there was a serious reason, you can share it later, once they’ve chosen to engage.
  • “Did you miss me?” No.
  • Reaching out on three platforms at once. One message, one place.

Copy-ready texts

When it’s been a short while (a week or two)

I dropped the ball and went quiet on you — sorry about that. Would you still be up for that drink?

I owe you an apology for disappearing. Things got hectic and I handled it badly. I’d like to make it up to you with coffee, if you’re open to it.

Not my finest move, going silent on you. I’ve been thinking about our conversation though. Can I try again?

When it’s been longer (a month or more)

I know it’s been a while and I disappeared without a word. That wasn’t fair to you, and I’m sorry. I’d like to reconnect if you’re open to it — and I understand completely if not.

I’ve thought about how I left things with you, and I regret it. You deserved a real answer. If you ever want to grab a coffee, I’d like that.

This is overdue, but I’m sorry for ghosting you. I was in a messy place and handled it poorly. No pressure to reply.

When there was a real reason

I went quiet a while back because [family stuff / a rough patch at work] took over, and I didn’t explain. I’m sorry. I’d love to catch up if you’re up for it.

Keep the reason to one clause. If they want details, they’ll ask.

When you just want to apologise, not restart

I wanted to say sorry for disappearing on you. You didn’t do anything wrong — that was on me. I hope you’re doing well.

“You didn’t do anything wrong” is the kindest line in this whole page. Ghosting makes people doubt themselves.

If they reply coldly

That’s fair. I’m sorry again, and I wish you the best.

Don’t argue with their reaction. You earned it.

Timing

  • Sooner is better. A comeback after two weeks is much easier to accept than one after six months.
  • Send it at a normal hour. A 1am “sorry I ghosted” looks like loneliness, not regret.
  • Don’t time it to a holiday or their birthday. It makes the apology feel convenient.

When to stop

One message. If they don’t reply, that’s their answer, and it’s a reasonable one. Don’t follow up.

If they do reply and agree to meet, the most important thing is simple: don’t disappear again. Make a concrete plan quickly — see how to set up a first date over text — and keep your replies consistent. If the conversation feels stiff at first, how to restart a dead conversation has ideas that don’t feel forced.

FAQ

Should I text someone I ghosted? If you regret it and would genuinely show up this time, yes. If you’d likely vanish again, a pure apology (asking for nothing) is kinder than trying to restart.

How do you apologise for ghosting someone? Name what you did (“I disappeared on you”), take responsibility without a long excuse, and let them decide what happens next.

Will someone forgive you for ghosting? Often, if it was early and your apology is simple and sincere. The longer things had gone and the longer you were silent, the lower the odds.

What if they don’t respond to my apology? Accept it and don’t follow up. Silence is a valid answer, and the apology still counts.

Is it better to text or call after ghosting someone? Text first. A call out of nowhere puts them on the spot. Offer a call or a coffee in the message instead.
