Learn to speak English the way it’s really spoken

Most English learners already know a lot of English. They studied it at school, they read it online, they understand films with subtitles. What they lack is confidence speaking — and practice with the fast, contracted, idiom-heavy English people use in real conversations. Bliss gives you a patient partner for exactly that.

Why learn English

What makes English worth it — and what makes it hard

The language of work and the internet

English is the most widely studied language in the world and the default for international business, science, aviation and a large part of the web. For many careers it is not a bonus but a requirement.

Spelling will not help you speak

English spelling is famously unreliable — "though", "through", "tough" — so reading a lot does not automatically make you sound natural. You have to hear and say the words.

Real English is full of shortcuts

"Gonna", "wanna", "lemme", dropped words, and phrasal verbs like "figure out" or "put off" are everywhere in speech and almost absent from textbooks. They are what makes native speakers hard to follow.

How Bliss teaches English

A tutor you talk to, focused on what trips English learners up

In every language, your Bliss tutor explains in the language you already speak, has you say the English out loud, and corrects the sentence you just said. For English specifically:

American English from California

Emily speaks natural American English. She teaches you the clear version first, then the relaxed one you will hear in films, meetings and on the street.

Explained in your own language

If you are a beginner, Emily explains in the language you already speak and gives you the English phrase to say. As you improve, she uses more and more English.

Phrasal verbs and tone, on your sentences

Emily fixes the sentence you just said — the wrong preposition, the too-formal word, the phrasal verb you avoided — and tells you why in one line.

Emily is Bliss’s native English tutor: sunny, encouraging and direct, from California. She is the default when you pick English, and every other Bliss tutor can teach it too.

English phrases for your first week

Ten everyday phrases that textbooks underrate, with the situation each one fits.

  1. Sorry, I didn’t catch that. I didn’t hear or understand you. Softer and more natural than "Repeat, please."
  2. Could you say that again, a bit slower? Please repeat more slowly.
  3. How’s it going? How are you? The answer is usually just "Good, you?" — not your life story.
  4. Can I get a coffee to go? I’d like a takeaway coffee. In the US, "Can I get…" is the normal way to order.
  5. I’m just looking, thanks. I don’t need help right now (in a shop).
  6. Sounds good. OK, that works for me.
  7. No worries. It’s fine / you’re welcome.
  8. Let me think about it. I need time before deciding. Also a polite way to say no.
  9. I’m running late. I’m going to be late.
  10. What do you do? What is your job? It does not mean "What are you doing right now?"
